[Aug.19] Korea Stock Market Wrap
This Korea stock market wrap starts with a painful number: -5.80%. The KOSPI closed at 6,471.17 on August 19, wiping out much of the recent rebound. Samsung Electronics fell 7.82% and SK hynix dropped 9.75%, so this was clearly a large-cap semiconductor selloff rather than a uniform collapse across every stock.
The macro backdrop did the damage. Global bond yields remained elevated, oil prices continued rising, and investors reduced exposure to technology stocks. My view is simple: yesterday’s failure above 7,000 was a warning; today confirmed that macro conditions can still overpower the semiconductor earnings story.
1. Korea Stock Market Wrap: KOSPI Fell 5.80%
The difference between the two indices matters. The KOSDAQ fell only 1.17%, while the KOSPI lost almost 6%. Heavy selling in Samsung Electronics and SK hynix explains much of that gap. A sell-side sidecar was also triggered early in the session as futures fell sharply.
This followed the reversal described in our August 18 Korea stock market wrap, when the KOSPI reached 7,216.62 intraday but finished below 7,000.
2. Semiconductors Were Hit, but the Supply Chain Did Not Collapse
Samsung Electronics fell 7.82% and SK hynix dropped 9.75%. Yet several semiconductor suppliers moved in the opposite direction. Justek gained 17.68%, Micro Contact Solution rose 9.66%, and HPSP added 7.15%.
That is why I would not call this the end of the AI-memory cycle. HBM, advanced packaging, test sockets and leading-edge process equipment still have demand behind them. The problem today was valuation pressure from higher yields and a broad reduction in risk.
3. SK hynix Changed the Setup After the Close
After the Korean market closed, SK hynix announced a KRW 40 trillion share repurchase and cancellation program. The company said the program reflects its view that the current share price does not fully represent its intrinsic value.
This is not a small signal. The buyback is scheduled from August 20 through November 19 and covers roughly 24 million shares. For tomorrow’s session, this announcement may become the first serious test of whether shareholder returns can offset the macro pressure.
See the official SK hynix announcement for the details.
4. Money Still Found Other Themes
North Korea-related stocks remained strong on expectations for renewed U.S.-North Korea dialogue. IndiF and Good People reached the daily limit, while Ananti rose 18.89%.
Biotech also resisted the broader weakness. Bioneer surged 29.99% after releasing hair-loss study results, while Vivozon Pharmaceutical and SillaJen also advanced. These were company-specific catalysts, not evidence that overall risk appetite was healthy.
5. Tomorrow Is About Yields, Oil and SK hynix
1. Whether SK hynix can stabilize after the KRW 40 trillion buyback announcement.
2. Whether Samsung Electronics follows that stabilization.
3. Whether U.S. long-term Treasury yields stop rising.
4. Whether oil continues climbing as Middle East tensions persist.
5. Whether KOSPI can reclaim the 6,500–6,600 area without another sidecar.
I would not chase a rebound simply because the index has fallen sharply. If SK hynix reacts positively to the buyback and U.S. yields cool, the risk-reward improves quickly. If yields and oil continue higher, even an enormous buyback may only slow the selling rather than reverse it.
